Quick Tour of Chinatown, Bangkok – A Street Food Heaven

Photographs and writeup by Mustafa Habib Chowdhury

I visited Bangkok for a short work trip and managed to sneak in a one day (July 13th, 2022) to do some photographic explorations of the streets of Chinatown Bangkok, Thailand. I had seen photos of Chinatown on the internet for a few years now, but nothing prepared me for the shock of discovering how large and varied the street food stalls and roadside shopping stalls were in Chinatown. For a street photographer or urban life chronicler, the large amounts of subjects present in Chinatown is almost overwhelming! Being continuously distracted by subjects running around one’s entire field of vision during framing a scene, it really takes quick thinking and a little bit of luck to captures a nice frame. Everything ranging from fruit juice stalls, snack counters, seafood dishes, street side pork dishes, jewelry stores, souvenir shops, clothing stores, brightly colored fascades of buildings with beautiful Bougainvilleas, Buddhist temples, and more can be found all around as one walks through the narrow alleyways and broad avenues in Chinatown. Unfortunately, it was a rainy and overcast most of the day and hence I managed to shoot in the intervals between scattered rains. As a result, the light was flat and diffused but I still tried to make the best of things.  I hope these photographs of Chinatown can give you a flavor of the vibrancy and multi-colored beauty of this iconic place in Bangkok. I would highly recommend you to visit here in your next Bangkok trip.
